NSF-DMREF: Rational design of redox-responsive materials for critical element separations

Brief Summary

This DMREF project involves computational and experimental efforts toward the recovery of rare-earth elements (REE) and platinum-group metals (PGM) from waste streams. At its core, we aim to develop new, efficient, ion-selective functional electrodes enabling electrosorption technologies. These methods are modular, reversible, minimize waste and exhibit improved energetics for separations. Key objectives identified in this project:

  1. Computationally-guided design and synthesis of ion-selective redox-active polymers
  2. Elucidating electrosorption & ion speciation by operando spectro-electrochemical methods
  3. Electrode ink development and processing for nanostructured electrodes
